Ella: Your Ultimate Guide to Sri Lanka's Most Scenic Hill Town

Ella is the kind of place travellers plan to visit for two nights and stay for five. This tiny hill town, perched at 1,041 metres with views over the southern plains, has become Sri Lanka's backpacker and wellness haven — thanks to its laid-back vibe, world-class hiking, and one of the most photographed railway bridges on earth.

The Nine Arch Bridge

Built entirely of stone, brick, and cement — without a single piece of steel — the Demodara Nine Arch Bridge is an engineering marvel from the British colonial era. The most dramatic way to see it is when the blue train crosses the arched span against the green hillside. Morning trains (around 9:15 AM) and afternoon trains (around 3:45 PM) offer the best photo opportunities. Walk along the tracks from Ella town (about 30 minutes) or take a tuk-tuk to the viewpoint.

Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock

Little Adam's Peak is a gentle 45-minute hike through tea estates to a conical summit with sweeping valley views — perfect for sunrise. For a more challenging day, Ella Rock (about 3 hours return) rewards with panoramic vistas of Ella Gap and the lowlands stretching to the coast. Both trails start from town and require no guide, though the Ella Rock path can be unclear — ask your guesthouse for current directions.

The Kandy-to-Ella Train

Widely considered one of Asia's most scenic rail journeys, the train from Kandy to Ella winds through tea plantations, crosses bridges over deep ravines, and passes waterfalls at every turn. The seven-hour journey is half the attraction — book a seat in the observation car or simply ride with the doors open, as locals do, for the full experience. Second class reserved offers the best balance of comfort and views.

Best Time to Visit

January to March is driest, but Ella's charm works year-round. Light rain showers add atmosphere and keep the hillsides impossibly green. Avoid public holidays when domestic tourists pack the small town.
