Nuwara Eliya: Sri Lanka's Little England and the Heart of Ceylon Tea Country

At 1,868 metres above sea level, Nuwara Eliya feels like a different country. The air is cool and crisp, the hillsides are carpeted in emerald tea, and the town itself — with its colonial bungalows, golf course, and English-style gardens — earned its nickname "Little England" during the British era. Today it is the gateway to Sri Lanka's finest tea estates and some of the island's most dramatic highland scenery.

The Tea Experience

Nuwara Eliya sits at the heart of Ceylon's most prestigious tea-growing region. Visits to working estates like Pedro, Labookellie, or Mackwoods let you walk through the meticulously pruned bushes, watch the plucking and rolling process, and taste fresh tea at the source. The contrast between the bright green leaves and the misty mountains makes this one of Sri Lanka's most photogenic landscapes.

Horton Plains and World's End

A 30-minute drive from town, Horton Plains National Park is a high-altitude grassland plateau ending at World's End — a sheer 870-metre cliff with views stretching to the southern coast on clear mornings. The 9-kilometre loop trail passes Baker's Falls and is best started before 6 AM, when clouds typically roll in by mid-morning.

Victoria Park and Gregory Lake

The town itself rewards a leisurely stroll. Victoria Park blooms with roses, ferns, and subtropical flowers, while Gregory Lake offers pedal boats and lakeside walks. The colourful Hindu temple of Seetha Amman, associated with the Ramayana epic, lies on the outskirts.
