Most international flights arrive at Bandaranaike Airport, making Negombo the natural first or last stop. The Dutch Canal, the fishing harbour's morning catch auction, and the long sandy beach offer an authentic introduction to coastal Sri Lanka — without the tourist crowds of the south.
Bentota and Beruwala
An hour south of Colombo, Bentota offers a rare combination: a palm-lined beach on one side and a mangrove-rich river on the other. The Bentota River safari reveals crocodiles, monitor lizards, and over 40 bird species. The Brief Garden — a private creation of the renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa — is a hidden gem of tropical landscape design.
Hikkaduwa: Surf, Snorkel, and Sea Turtles
Hikkaduwa's coral sanctuary is one of the best snorkelling sites on the west coast, with colourful reef fish, turtles, and even the occasional reef shark. The town itself pulses with surf culture — affordable board rentals, beachside bars, and a laid-back vibe that keeps visitors coming back.
Mount Lavinia: Colombo's Beachside Escape
Just south of Colombo, Mount Lavinia is the capital's traditional beach getaway — a broad sandy strip fronted by the colonial-era Mount Lavinia Hotel, seafood shacks, and sunset promenades. It's the easiest west-coast beach to reach if you're arriving in or leaving Colombo.
Kalutara: The Riverside Stupa
Where the Kalu Ganga meets the Indian Ocean, Kalutara is famous for its unusual hollow stupa — the Kalutara Bodhiya — sitting right beside the coastal road. Combine a stop here with a lunch on the river estuary and a walk on the town's long, quiet beach.
Balapitiya: Madu River Mangrove Safari
Between Bentota and Hikkaduwa, Balapitiya is the launching point for boat safaris on the Madu Ganga — a lagoon dotted with dozens of small islands, cinnamon plantations, and dense mangrove tunnels. A two-hour cruise is one of the west coast's most memorable half-days.
