The island boasts the highest density of leopards anywhere on earth, herds of wild Asian elephants, endemic primates found nowhere else, blue whales that feed just kilometres offshore, and over 450 bird species. With 26 national parks and over 60 wildlife sanctuaries, a safari is an essential part of any Sri Lanka itinerary.
Yala National Park: Leopard Territory
Yala (Block 1) is Sri Lanka's most-visited park and the best place on earth to see wild leopards. With an estimated one leopard per square kilometre, sighting rates are remarkably high — particularly in the dry months of February to July when animals concentrate around water holes. Beyond leopards, Yala is home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species.
Udawalawe: Elephant Kingdom
If elephants are your priority, Udawalawe delivers. This open grassland park virtually guarantees elephant sightings — herds of 20 or more are common, often with young calves. The adjacent Elephant Transit Home rehabilitates orphaned calves for release back into the wild, and the 3 PM feeding session is a remarkable experience.
Whale Watching: Mirissa and Trincomalee
Sri Lanka's southern coast (Mirissa, Dondra) offers world-class blue whale watching from November to April. These are the largest animals ever to have lived on earth, and seeing them surface just metres from your boat is genuinely humbling. The east coast (Trincomalee) provides sperm whale and dolphin encounters from May to October.

Yala: February to July (dry season). Udawalawe: year-round. Whale watching: November to April (south), May to October (east). Bird watching: November to March, when migrants from Siberia and Northern Europe arrive.
