Founded in 1975, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is the world’s first and largest sanctuary for orphaned, abandoned, and injured Asian elephants. Located in the lush Kegalle district, approximately 90 km from Colombo, this facility provides a protected environment for a herd of nearly 100 elephants. Its primary mission is to offer a lifeline to elephants that have lost their mothers or were displaced in the wild.
Visitors are welcome to witness the daily life of the herd as they interact with their mahouts and each other.
Elephant Bathing: The herd is escorted to the nearby Ma Oya River twice daily. Watching these majestic animals splash and play in the water is the orphanage's most popular spectacle.
Bottle Feeding: Guests can observe the heart-warming feeding sessions where younger calves are bottle-fed by caretakers.
Park Hours: 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM (Ticket counter closes at 5:30 PM).
